Filipino Ube Donuts

The idea of making donuts with iconic ingredients from around the world is not only good for business, but a smart way to introduce people to new flavors. Case and point are the famous Ube Donuts from Gurnee Donuts, made with a velvety type of purple yam popular in Filipino cuisine.

The donut shop had been known for their cake and yeast-raised donuts, but it wasn’t until they won DonutFest that people started traveling from miles away for a chance to try this unique purple donut. They became Instagram famous.

The owners are Cambodian and Filipino, with many Filipino friends in the area. They created versions that both their family and friends could enjoy: a simple glazed ube donut, a purple frosted ube donut and one sprinkled with toasted coconut. The first one is definitively the best, in our opinion.

But they also have a lot of great options, including apple fritters, red velvet and more classic flavors. If you happen to be on your way to Gurnee Mills Mall, Six Flags or Milwaukee, definitively stop by this great shop. Just keep in mind that Ube Donuts are only available on weekends until 2pm.
